Which bat is legal depends on the league and the division and on the bat. This page lays out what Little League and PONY say, with the rule quoted by number, so you can check a bat before you buy it. Always confirm with your local league, which can add its own restrictions.
Little League baseball bats by division
| Division | Required standard | Max length | Max barrel diameter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tee Ball | Certified tee ball bat, 26 in or shorter, with the USA Baseball mark and the words “only for use with approved tee balls” | — | — |
| Minor and Majors (ages up to 12) | USABat logo on any non-wood or laminated bat. Solid one-piece wood needs no logo. | 33 in | 2-5/8 in |
| Intermediate (50/70) and Junior League | USABat or BBCOR. Solid one-piece wood needs no logo. | 34 in | 2-5/8 in |
| Senior League | BBCOR for any bat not made of a single piece of wood. Bat weight may not be more than 3 oz below its length in inches (a 33 in bat cannot weigh under 30 oz). | 36 in | 2-5/8 in |
- BPF 1.15 bats are prohibited in all divisions that use the USABat standard.
- Wood bats must be at least 15/16 in thick at the narrowest point (7/8 in for bats under 30 in). Tape or a sleeve on a wood bat may extend 16 in from the small end in Minor and Majors, and 18 in in Intermediate, Junior and Senior.
- Every non-wood bat needs a grip of cork, tape or composition material that runs at least 10 in up from the small end.
- Batting donuts are not allowed. Pine tar is allowed on the handle but never on the barrel or over the certification mark.
- A bat that is altered, cracked, has sharp edges, or will not pass through the right bat ring (2-1/4 in or 2-5/8 in) must be removed from play.
Heads-up on BBCOR. On July 7, 2026, Little League noted that USA Baseball will begin overseeing a newly branded USA BBCOR standard. Little League says this does not affect the 2026 Intermediate, Junior and Senior tournaments or the 2027 seasons, and that it will tell leagues about later changes. Source: Little League bat rules.

PONY baseball bats
- PONY adopted the USA Baseball bat standard (USABat) on January 1, 2018.
- Except for BBCOR-certified -3 bats, any 2-1/4 in or 2-5/8 in barrel bat with a minus factor (-5, -7, -9 and so on) must carry the USABat licensing stamp to be used in league and tournament play. PONY also allows 2-1/2 in USABat-certified bats.
- Tee ball bats need the USA Baseball mark with the words “Only For Use With Approved Tee Ball Bats.”

Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth League
Babe Ruth League publishes its own bat information for Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth baseball. We could not retrieve that page, so we are not printing a rule for it here. Check Babe Ruth League’s site or your local league before buying.
What this means when you buy
- Look for the USABat mark (or BBCOR, if your division allows it) printed on the barrel. A bat without a legible mark cannot be used, and Little League says it will be removed from the game.
- Length limits are caps, not recommendations. For sizing a bat to the player, our guide to choosing a bat explains the trade-offs.
- If your player moves between leagues (rec ball, travel, school), check each league. Rules for travel and tournament organizations differ.
